Basic and applied research contributes in building a wealth of knowledge that enhances ICT advancement, as knowledge capital is considered the key driver of innovation that can give the UAE a leading position in the global marketplace. ICT Fund provides generous grants to research projects that lead to the development of applied R&D and to the acquisition of patents. Furthermore, in partnership with universities and research organizations, the Fund actively supports the commercialization of applied R&D, leading to the establishment of start-ups in the ICT sector. ICT Fund extends funds based on merit, notwithstanding any prior approvals, or the current level of funding recipients. Each project has its own parameters based on the scope of the project, and the funding is decided according to the proposal. Among the key funded projects in this field include but not limited to:


EBTIC is a jointly established research and innovation centre by BT, ETISALAT and Khalifa University of Science, Technology And Research (KUSTAR). It is located at the Abu Dhabi Campus of KUSTAR with management and research staff from BT, ETISALAT and KUSTAR.

EBTIC aims to advance intelligent systems technologies for the Next Generation Networks (NGNs) and NGN-enabled ICT applications and services, in order to put in place the support infrastructure to facilitate, develop and enable the Digital Networked Economy in the UAE and beyond.

Through collaboration with industry, universities and governmental organisations, EBTIC is expected to become a driving force for innovation in the field of NGN enabled ICT applications and services, both within the Middle East region and beyond.

National Space Science and Technology Center, United Arab Emirates University

The National Center for Space Science and Technology was established at the initiative of the United Arab Emirates University, Emirates Space Agency and the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) represented by the ICT Sector Development Fund. The Center's priority is excellence in space science, and it serves as an incubator for research, development and innovation in space, leadership in space engineering and technology, and innovative solutions to societal challenges.

The Center aims at providing the largest number of innovations in the field of technology sciences in line with the UAE National Vision 2021 to achieve UAE’s stable and diversified economy that is flexible in adopting new economic models.
